FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a non profit organization, Founded in 1989, by Dean Kamen and is aimed at inspiring young people's interests in science and technology, and to motivate them to pursue education and careers in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
FIRST does this with its four primary programs : FLL.JR, FLL, FTC and FRC. These are all international competitions run by FIRST.
“FIRST is more than robots. The robots are a vehicle for the students to learn important life skills. Kids often come in not knowing what to expect - of the program nor of themselves. They leave, even after the first season, with a vision, with confidence, and with a sense that they can create their own future”
What is FIRST
FRC, or FIRST Robotics Competition, is a global competition in which teams of 10-50 students in grades 9th-12th participate in a sportive engineering experience. Each year, the rules of the competition greatly change, with each year having a different theme and challenges. Teams are required to build a robot that plays the game in the most efficient way.
Teams are given only six weeks to build their robots and are expected to build it from scratch.
But the FRC, and FIRST, are more than robots. In the FRC, teams are encouraged and rewarded for doing social activities, such as mentoring younger teams, sharing what they had learned so others learn from their mistakes.
